How to Sew a Reusable Fabric Tote Bag
- Start by cutting two rectangles from your exterior fabric and two from your lining fabric. A common size is approximately 18” x 14”, but this can be adjusted depending on how large you want your tote.
- Next, cut two long fabric strips for the handles. Quilting cotton works well here, especially when folded and stitched for strength.
- Sew the exterior pieces together with right sides facing, leaving the top open. Repeat this step with the lining pieces, leaving a small opening at the bottom so the bag can be turned right side out later.
- Attach the handles to the exterior bag, evenly spaced on each side. Once the handles are secured, place the exterior bag inside the lining (right sides together) and sew around the top edge.
- Turn the bag right side out through the opening in the lining, stitch the lining closed, then press and topstitch around the top for a clean finish.
